Dictionary of about 15,000 common words in British English. Check unusual words and names in a learner's dictionary.
Try it in class: project a sentence in phonemic script only and ask pairs to write it out in normal spelling. Then switch weak forms off and on so students see how small words like to, for and the shrink in natural speech.

Try it in class: students write a secret word in phonemic script, a partner decodes it, and you type it here to settle any arguments. Words that sound the same, like /pleɪn/, start a good chat about spelling.
Symbols this tool uses
- /ə/ is the schwa, the weak vowel in about /əˈbaʊt/ and teacher /ˈtiːtʃə/.
- /i/ without a length mark is the happy vowel at the end of words like happy /ˈhæpi/. Some books write /ɪ/ here.
- /eə/ is the square vowel, as in chair /tʃeə/. Newer books sometimes write /ɛː/.
- /e/, /r/, /ʌ/ and /ɡ/ are the usual EFL symbols (strict IPA uses ɛ ɹ ɐ). You can type either kind.
- ˈ comes just before the stressed syllable and ˌ before a secondary stress. One-syllable words have no mark.
- Endings like table are shown as /ˈteɪbəl/. Many dictionaries write /ˈteɪbl/: both describe the same sound.
